BACKGROUND & FURTHER INFORMATION

Alexander Rudd was born in Preston, England. At the age of 16, Alex won the National Young Composer of the Year Award competition for the UK. Besides film scoring, he also performs as a singer, pianist, and composer and conducts for concert commissions. He is a Fulbright Scholar and studied at Trinity College of Music in London and at the University of Southern California.

Alex has also collaborated on a timeless collection of new standards co-written with Academy Award-winning lyricist Don Black (Diamonds Are Forever, The Man With The Golden Gun, Born Free, Thunderball). The album, entitled Stay Away From Stars, was recorded with the English Session Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios, featuring the vocals of Mica Paris, Mairead Carlin, and Polly Gibbons.

Alex has been the featured UK Composer in the International Artists Workshop for the European Union. His concert works have been performed throughout Europe, the UK, and the U.S.A. His theatre work includes numerous commissions from The Royal National Theatre, The Old Vic, and The Barbican, and he has written and collaborated on musicals including Force 9 & ½ with John Nicholson (Peepolykus), which won a Musical Theatre Award at the Edinburgh Festival, and three commissioned musicals collaborating with writer and lyricist Jenifer Toksvig.

“What a joy it is to write songs with Alex. His melodies are fresh, original, and they never leave you. He is a major talent who is equally at home writing for Lady Gaga or for Tony Bennett. Can’t wait to get round a piano with him again.”

Don Black OBE (Academy Award-Winning Lyricist)

“I worked with Alex on a series for the BBC and his work lifted my film into a different class. I’m not from a musical background but Alex was brilliant at interpreting my requirements into music tracks that always delivered exactly what I’d been hoping for, across a huge range of styles and in super quick time. I don’t know how he does it. More than that, Alex is brilliant fun to work with and brought bags of enthusiasm to the project despite working under extreme time pressures and changing briefs.”

Victoria Bell (Producer, BBC)

“Alex did an excellent job producing a body of composed music for our 9pm Channel Four Series, You Can’t Get the Staff. He listened carefully to the brief and delivered quickly and efficiently. Not only did his music add a layer of production value but he was also a pleasure to work with.”

Tom Whitrow (Producer, C4)
